Action 1: Secure Investment in Safe Infrastructure
Action 2: Eliminate Policy Barriers to Safe Streets
Disclaimer: The Actions listed here are ideas to jumpstart a conversation on improving the Hubbards streetscape. A formal Site Plan will be developed soon.
Element 1: Halifax Regional Municipality Safe Infrastructure
For our committee a key priority is connecting, at a minimum, the length of road running from the end of the existing sidewalk across from the Ronald A. Walker Funeral Home to the Shatford Memorial Elementary School. This would physically connect a number of key community facilities including an elementary school, post office, library, coffee shop, waterfront, and shopping centre among many other businesses that span the main strip of Hubbards. We do however think that there is opportunity to expand this stretch of sidewalk to move beyond the elementary school and continue to either the Hubbards Landing Plaza or all the way to Queensland Beach. The Hubbards Landing Plaza has an existing strip of sidewalk already installed which would help support more businesses with this move.
- Option A: Sidewalk from the Ronald A. Walker Funeral Home to Shatford Elementary School. Length: 1.4 km
- Option B: Sidewalk from the Ronald A. Walker Funeral Home to the Liam Mathers Memorial Skate Park & the Hubbards Area Recreation Association (i.e. ball fields). Length: 2.4 km
- Option C: Sidewalk from the Ronald A. Walker Funeral Home to Queensland Beach Provincial Park. Length: 3.7 km
Element 2: Chester Municipal Safe Infrastructure
In conversations with councillor Floyd Shatford he commented that the Municipality of Chester may potentially not be interested in installing new sidewalks in the community of Hubbards. He mentioned that we were in need of connecting with Gord Tate who directed this type of project and is their Active Living Coordinator. Our committee is recommending that a compromise to sidewalks could be made by instead installing boardwalks. This stretch of boardwalk would span the length of Highway 329 from the Aspotogan Heritage Trust (AHT) to Hubbards Sailing Club (HSC) and then continue for the full length of the Fox Point Front Rd. This would physically connect the Hubbards Mall, the AHT, Through the Years Daycare, The Hubbards District Firehall, and Hubbards Sailing Club to the rest of the community.
- Option A: Sidewalk Aspotogan Heritage Trust to the Hubbards Sailing Club (Hwy 329) to the Ronald Walker Funeral Home (Fox Point Front Rd.). Length: 2.1 km
- Option B: Boardwalk Aspotogan Heritage Trust to the Hubbards Sailing Club (Hwy 329) to the Ronald Walker Funeral Home (Fox Point Front Rd.). Length: 2.1 km
- Option C: Boardwalk Aspotogan Heritage Trust to the Hubbards Sailing Club (Hwy 329). Length: 1.0 km
- Option D: Boardwalk Hubbards Sailing Club (Hwy 329) to the Ronald Walker Funeral Home (Fox Point Front Rd.). Length: 1.1 km
